Pub is the Hub Guide April 2014

The Royal Oak and Castle in Pevensey offers a range of quality home cooked food, which is largely sourced from the licensees’ family farm adjoining the pub. The pub offers regular around the world food nights and themed events such as the Pevensey Village Dickensian evening and enjoys accreditation from Cask Marque in recognition of the quality and range of the real ales on offer to customers.

The pub is located adjacent to the East Gate of Pevensey Castle parts of which date back to the 4th century. In addition to the seating area in front of the pub, which is the old market square, the pub has an attractive walled garden with plenty of seating.

This provides an ideal location for live theatre productions given by small scale touring groups of professional artists. They form part of the rural touring scheme brought together by ‘Applause’. Through these live performances Applause aims to make a contribution to the well-being of the local community.

Following contact with Pub is The Hub via Wealden District Council, Debby Fitton, licensee at The Royal Oak and Castle has set up book exchange programme. This entails having between 300 to 500 books with a modest grant of £300 from Pub is The Hub to put up shelving in a specially designated area of the pub. Here, people donate, borrow books or pick up the same book each time they come in until they’ve finished reading it.

In addition, Debby is starting up a supper club, providing a regular space for people with carers to enjoy a relaxing night of great food and a break as well as selling essential provisions over the bar to locals. They are selling their own sausages and bacon as well as the essentials that people run out of like milk and vegetables to save them having to travel out of the area.

Friendly, good value and good food
Went for a walk round Pevensey and wanted a dog friendly pub where we could have lunch. Decided to try Royal Oak and Castle Inn. The atmosphere was good. We were given a menu each by the helpful bar lady and found another menu with a lunch offer on the table. For £10 each, we had two excellent courses (plus we bought drinks). On this menu, there was a choice of 4 or 5 dishes for each course. I had a very nice beef chilli and rice followed by the best vanilla ice cream I’ve had; my husband had a lovely minestrone soup and delicious bread followed by lambs liver and bacon with mash and 3 veg, which he thoroughly enjoyed. They told me that they do sometimes do gluten-free cake, but unfortunately not that day. The drinks were not more expensive than other pubs. The bar lady was discreetly attentive. I would highly recommend this pub and fully intend to go back again. Well done Royal Oak. Trip Advisor review, January 2017
