Dementia Action Week

A busy line-up of activities for people with dementia and their carers is taking place during National Dementia Action Week which runs from 20- 26 May

These include Dementia Friends awareness sessions, story sharing, swing time bands, swim sessions, rock and roll, poetry, indoor games and a garden party.

Full details of all 22 events can be found in the National Dementia Action Week programme which can be downloaded from the Wealden website at www.wealden.gov.uk/dementia

Among the highlights are a trip from Mayfield to Teapot Island in Kent on Monday 20 May, organised by MayFacs; an inclusive swim session at Crowborough Leisure Centre on Tuesday 21 May, a Dementia–Friendly screening of His Girl Friday at Uckfield Picture House on Wednesday 22 May; a health walk in Ninfield on Thursday 23 May and a Dementia-Friendly church service at St Denys’ Church, Rotherfield on Friday 24 May.

On Wednesday 22 May at Wadhurst Manor Care Home there is a meeting of the Wadhurst Carers Group, providing a break for carers while their cared-for person enjoys a supervised activity. Also on 22 May, there is a meeting of the Sporting Memories Polegate Group in Polegate Community Centre – an opportunity for older sports fans to talk sport and reminisce over a cuppa.

There’s also an Understanding Dementia event on 22 May at Hailsham which provides insights on living with dementia and how carers can overcome communications barriers.

Crowborough Dementia Forum has organised a Crowborough and Villages Cares event on 21 May at Crowborough Community Centre; and Uckfield Dementia Forum has organised a Care and Support Expo on 23 May at Uckfield Civic Centre – both are great introductions to what services, support and activities are available in your area.

Dementia Forums can be now found across Wealden at Uckfield, Polegate, Crowborough, Hailsham, Wadhurst and Ninfield. They hold regular meetings and many organise monthly memory cafes and dementia-friendly film screenings.
